Malawi’s veteran storyteller Dyson Gonthi was on February 16 elected as the Chewa Heritage Foundation (Chefo) Southern Region chapter chairperson at a function held at the Museum of Malawi in Blantyre.

Gonthi was among other 19 new office bearers who were elected on the day to relieve the interim leaders who have been serving since the establishment of the Chefo southern region chapter in 2010.

Versatile Gonthi, who co-starred in MBC Radio drama and folktale programmes, said he is very happy to be the elected chairperson as, together with the help of others, he co-started the Southern Region grouping with a vision.

“The vision that I have and was not implemented will be implemented right now that I am the chairperson. I will do all I can to sensitise people not to have bad stereotypes on the Chewa tribe,” said Gonthi.

He said he plans to boost cooperation among the Chewas in the Southern Region as the group’s main goal is to serve as a platform where Chewa people can meet, socialise and share ideas.

Gonthi said the objective of the Chefo arm is to look after Chewa children, teach them about their tribe and encourage them on education. It also wants to encourage Chewas to promote culture in terms of dances, traditional practices that take place when a girl or boy has reached puberty and others.
