The Office of the President and Cabinet on Tuesday announced the appointment of Rexie Chiluzi, who was assistant Auditor General, as the Deputy Auditor General (DAG) of the National Audit Office with effect from September 27 2012.

NAO corporate communications officer Thomas Chafunya in a statement said Chiluzi’s has risen through the ranks since he joined the audit office on January 30 1986 as assistant auditor.

Chiluzi, 52, has represented Malawi on the international scene as a member of the External Auditors Board for the African Union in Addis Ababa from 2006 to 2009 where within these years he was elected the chairperson of the AU Board of External Auditors.

At the moment, he deputises nobody following the retirement of former Auditor General Reckford Kampanje in August.

Kampanje’s early retirement came at a time when NAO was locked in controversy after audit exposed alleged abuses of funds resulting in the Norwegian Government withholding of support while the Department for International Development (DfID) warned that there will be no funding until the audit queries are resolved.

Britain has since demanded a refund of K79 million discovered in an audit as “misused” funds from a DfID funded Capacity Building Programme for the period January 1 2011 to October 31 2011.
