The Malawi national ladies golf team has received timely boost ahead of the East and Central Africa Ladies’ Golf Championship following the availability of the country’s best female golfer Roza Mbilizi.
There has been a cloud of uncertainty over Mbilizi’s availability for the international showpiece due to her tight work schedule.
However, Malawi team coach Dingaan Chirwa yesterday said there is a 90 percent chance that Mbilizi will feature in the tournament.

Mbilizi: Her inclusion automatic
With a handicap six, Mbilizi basks in the glory of being the best female golfer on the domestic scene. She is 11 handicap better than second-ranked Regina Mwanza.
“Her schedule is always very tight. Although not fully confirmed, she can manage her schedule and we could just be lucky to have her on board. She is currently playing very solid golf and Malawi needs her.
“Her availability appeared doubtful, but now it looks certain that she will be part of the team. It is a big boost because she is by far the best [female] golfer in the land,” said Chirwa.
The coach said Mbilizi’s inclusion is automatic as she does not need to compete with anyone considering her strong handicap.
Chirwa said the coming in of Mbilizi has increased the list of players from four to five. The other players are Mwanza, Carol Banda, Shira Chinkhandwe and Dwangwa-based Ruth Mvula, who has replaced Doreen Mwenitete on technical grounds.
“This means that Roza is the only one whose place is guaranteed in the final squad, the rest will battle for the remaining three slots,” he said.
However, Mbilizi was a model of modesty, saying despite her automatic inclusion she will sweat hard to deservedly make the grade.
Meanwhile, Chirwa said the team will go into penultimate camp today in Lilongwe until Sunday. Then they will regroup next Thursday in the countdown to the June1-5 tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club.
Six countries including Zambia, Uganda and Tanzania are expected to take part in the international competition.
