Government, through the Irrigation Rural Livelihoods and Agricultural Development Project (IRLADP), on Friday handed over a K55 million Nanzolo B small-scale gravity-fed irrigation scheme to communities in Chikhwawa.

The scheme, which uses water from Mapelera River, has 170 small-scale farmers and covers 48 hectares.

IRLADP national project coordinator Dickxie Verson Kampani thanked the farmers for showing interest in the project.

“This project was jointly funded by the World Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Development through the Government of Malawi, the Ministry of Agriculture.

“We are handing over this project to the community happy people because we have achieved our goal of transforming rural people’s lives,” said Kampani.

Shire Valley Agricultural Development Division (SVADD) programme manager Manfrey Mlotha said it is high time farmers embraced irrigation farming.
