Malawi issues licence to Chinese company
Malawi Government through the Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) has issued a new tobacco license bringing the total number of tobacco buyers of Malawian tobacco to eight.
Confirming the news, TCC executive director Bruce Munthali said the positive development would increase the players for effective competition.
He, however, urged all buyers to fully participate in the buying and be present at the trading auction floors.
“The China Africa Trading Company is specifically interested in buying Malawi tobacco, of course this follows a visit the president made to China, followed by the minister and myself as well. If there are more players, it means the prices are good. Malawi already produces too much tobacco and this contributes one way or another to the low prices,” he said.
Since the opening of the tobacco market, tobacco growers have been crying foul over the low prices.
