Council of Southern Africa Football Associations(Cosafa) yesterday released         the official logo for the competition scheduled for August and September which will be officially called ‘Cosafa Women’s Championship Malawi 2024’.

The logo, released by Cosafa media manager Lynda Greef, was captioned “Cosafa Women’s Champions League 2024 destination Malawi”.

Greef in an interview confirmed the development, but Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka could only confirm that Malawi expressed interest to host the event.

“The process [of hosting] is far from over,” he said.

Ascent Soccer will represent Malawi in the interclub competition after emerging the 2023 FAM Women’s National Championship winners.

Ascent Academy director Thom Nkorongo in an interview said hosting the event will be a big advantage for the Lilongwe-based outfit.

“Playing at home will mean a lot for us. Apart from the home ground advantage, financially, we will also save a lot,” he said.

Ascent will be the second Malawian side to participate in the competition following Kukoma Ntopwa Queens’ inaugural participation in 2023.

During the competition held in Durban, South Africa, Kukoma Ntopwa Queens finished last in Group A after a one-all draw against Lesotho’s Defence Force Ladies and losses to Zambia’s Green Buffaloes 1-0 and Double Action of Botswana 4-0.

Hosting of the Cosafa Women’s Champions League comes after Malawi also successfully hosted the Four-Nations Men’s Tourney in March involving the Flames, Zambia’s Chipolopolo, Zimbabwe’s Warriors and eventual champions Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
