Malawi might not see Suya’s Zambian movie

Chenda, a Zambian movie that stars Malawian top actress Flora Suya, might not be premiered in Malawi.

Chenda, directed by prolific filmmaker Owas Ray Mwape, was premiered at Fresh View Cinemas in Lusaka, Zambia two months ago.

The film stars the award-winning Suya as Chenda, a proud and bitter housewife whose dreams of having a family are ruined by her husband’s infidelity with a shanty town girl.

In an interview with The Nation on Wednesday, Suya said she approached the management of the movie company to also premiere it in Malawi since it features her, but they were skeptical as they were in negotiations to sell the rights of the movie to a Mauritian company.

“They said they might premiere it here, but they were afraid that they might not be able to sell DVDs since they would not have the rights,” said Suya.

However, Suya defended the no premiere for Malawi, saying it has nothing to do with Mwape’s arrest.

“There are people who are working and that does not stop the movie from being premiered,” said Suya.

In a related development, the director of the movie, Mwape, was arrested this month and is now at Kamwala Prison.

According to Zambia’s Daily Mail, Mwape was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour for forgery and uttering false documents. He was alleged to have forged his wife’s signature and uttered a false document in relation to a vehicle, which he later put in his names.
