Police in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre, have arrested Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) official Noel Masangwi and five others in connection with the murder of fourth-year Polytechnic student Robert Chasowa.

Masangwi, who is DPP’s governor for the southern region, surrendered himself at Southern Region Police Headquarters around 9 am after police left a message at his Kanjedza home that he was wanted.
He was taken to Chilomoni Police after spending some minutes at the Southern Region Police Headquarters.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said others arrested were a police officer Stanford Horea, Mike Chitenje, DPP youth director Louis Ngalande, Stone Mwamande and Sam Chulu. Others were arrested on Tuesday evening.

The arrests follow the release of a report by a Commission of Inquiry President Joyce Banda instituted to probe Chasowa’s death. He is believed to have been murdered by the DPP functionaries with the help of some police officers.
Gondwa said other arrests would follow.
