Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) has said it will soon publish a list of all donations being made towards the relief of people affected by the recent floods.

Dodma Principal Secretary Paul Chiunguzeni said this in Lilongwe yesterday after receiving relief items worth K3.5 million on behalf of the Office of the Vice-President from the Community of Malawians in Tanzania (Comata).

The donated items included bags of maize flour, second-hand clothes and some medical equipment.

Said Chiunguzeni: “We will surely make known the list of all those who have donated towards the cause and what they entrusted our department to handle. I believe it will be one way of ensuring transparency and accountability, which seemingly lack in many an institution.”

He was responding to a question on how the donated relief aid that his department has been handling since the floods hit the country is being channelled to the intended beneficiaries.

A representative of Comata, Evance Moyo, who was accompanied by Abels Mkandawire from the Malawi High Commission office in Dar es Salaam, said about 50 member families comprising professionals working in various fields contributed towards the donation.
