Australian science lecturer Graham Walker has advised Museum of Malawi to consider having a science centre as a first step in promoting science and influence the locals to appreciate the science concept.

Walker, who lectures at the Australian National University, is in the country for week long science demonstrations in Chikhwawa courtesy of his university and the Museum of Malawi science project. The project is being sponsored by Australian Embassy. He said this on Martyrs’ Day at the Museum during the training of trainees who will be demonstrating some science techniques during the tour.

“Science centre is the first step in promoting science. Many countries across the globe have science centres and they have helped the communities to get the basic concepts in science. Malawi is a potential country for science because it relies on agriculture and has minerals among others. People need to know the basic concepts of science used in these,” he said.

During the training, the participants were trained on how air pressure works and chemical reaction among others. Museum Education Officer Aaron Maluwa said the duties of museums go beyond just culture. He said science is the key concept that harbours the success of the museum. He mentioned the preservation of animal skin as one of the concepts of science benefiting the museum.
