Some Malawi Government officials will from this week undergo report writing training on the disarmament agreement.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Quent Kalichero said Malawi is among several African countries that have never reported steps taken to support the disbarment resolution since its signing in 2004.

This is why, he said, the UN 1540 Committee Group of Experts will be in Malawi this week to help the country to understand the implications of not doing anything on the resolution.

Kalichero said the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ministry will host the experts from August 6-7 in conjunction with the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (Unrec) with funding from the UN Office on Disarmament Affairs (Unoda).

The workshop will bring together the UN and national stakeholders to the resolution, including the Malawi National Counter-Terrorism Committee; the National Committee on Anti-Money Laundering/Combating Financing of Terrorism; the Office of President and Cabinet; ministries of Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, Justice, Finance, Defence, Health, Transport, Tourism, Trade, Natural Resources, Agriculture; MDF; Police Services; NIB; FIU; Malawi Bureau of Standards; Malawi Revenue Authority; Reserve Bank; University of Malawi (Chancellor College); Mzuzu University; and Malawi Permanent Mission to the UN.

She said the objectives of the workshop were to inform the key Malawian stakeholders on its obligations to the implementation of Resolution 1540 in 2004, facilitate a needs analysis and identification of areas of assistance on the part of Malawi on the implementation of the resolution, support government experts to draft a national report on implementation of the resolution and facilitate dialogue.
