Malawi is set to open Phalombe and Chiradzulu teachers training colleges (TTCs) in September this year in an effort to produce enough qualified primary school teachers nationwide, acting public relations officer (PRO) in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Manfred Ndovi said.

Ndovi made the remarks at Domasi College of Education in Zomba during a brainstorming workshop to strategise how teacher training colleges can produce quality teachers.
He said government established the new TTCs to replace open distance learning (ODL) studies and increase intake of primary school teachers.
According to Ndovi, government did not abolish ODL, but resolved to increase the number of TTCs to accommodate more student teachers. Most ODL graduates were unable to deliver quality education due to inadequate training time in the colleges.
He said primary school education requires qualified teachers as it is the cornerstone in Malawi’s education system.
Said Ndovi: “The country cannot achieve quality education if we have primary school teachers who are under-qualified. We believe that these colleges will improve the quality of teachers in the country.”
