Malawi to translate ERP into local languages
The Ministry of Information and Civic Education has said it will translate into vernacular languages the Economic Recovery Plan (ERP) so that many people should understand it.
Government came up with ERP to resuscitate the country’s ailing economy which is characterised by high interest rates, high inflation rates, erratic supply of fuel and shortages of foreign exchange.
The ministry’s Principal Secretary Anthony Livuza said putting ERP in local languages will make as many Malawians as possible to own the plan.
“In fact, the process has already started and we are currently working on a Chichewa version. We intend to translate it into as many local languages as possible,” he said.
The ministry’s deputy director of information for press and publications, Diana Nkhulembe, in a separate interview said ERP is just one of the many documents they want to translate into local languages.
She said apart from Chichewa, the document will also be put in Chiyao and Chitumbuka.
Nkhulembe said translation into other languages will start in the next financial year.
She said the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy II (MGDS), tripartite election materials, safe motherhood and other reproductive health papers are among the documents they want to translate.—Mana
