Malawi’s African Taekwondo Championships trip flops

The Taekwondo Association of Malawi (TAM) has failed to source K4 million it requires to send four athletes to Antananarivo, Madagascar for this year’s African Taekwondo Championships starting on November 2.

This would have been Malawi’s first participation at that annual event.

National coach and athlete Lovemore Masinga, who was expected to travel to Madagascar together with Andrew Soole, Yamikani Chimpeni and George Mbeyi, confirmed to The Nation on Sunday that they have failed to make their first appearance at the continental martial arts contest.

“This competition acts as qualifiers for world events such as the Olympics, but we have let it go due to lack of finances.

“Unfortunately, we also failed to send athletes to the 2012 Olympic Games in London because we did not contest at last year’s African Championships,” he said.

He said even if the finances can be found in the remaining period, they would still not be able to travel to Madagascar because the deadline for the registration has already passed.

Malawi won three gold medals and two silver at the 2010 Kwanjangnim Southern African Taekwondo Championships in South Africa. This was the last time the country’s taekwondo athletes participated in an international contest.
