It was generally a low start for Malawians at the start of the Mocambola Football League across the borders in Mozambique.

Former Flames goalkeeper Simplex Nthala pulled some fantastic saves as his Maxaquene started the season with a 1-0 win over Nacala Railway on Sunday.

Journal Noticias newspaper reported that Mocambola league’s top scorer for last season, Isac, scored the lone goal in the 80th minute when Railway “threatened Simplex goal.”

In another game, Desportivo de Nacala, featuring Malawians Sankhani Nyirenda and Idrissa Walesi, edged out HCB Songo 1-0 with on-loan Silver Strikers’ Charles Swini and Frank Banda playing for the losing side.

On Sunday, Maputo derby between Sports League and Costa del Sol ended goalless. League featured Zicco Mkanda whereas Chimango Kayira played for Costa.

Chawanangwa Kawonga’s Chibuto FC missed a penalty to draw 0-0 at home against Quelimane. The season kicked off on Saturday with sponsor mcel announcing $200 000 (K80 million) annual sponsorship.

The official match marking the start of the season was played at the Municipal Stadium in Vilanculos, where Maputo Sports defeated newly promoted ENL 1-0.

In Botswana, Lawrence Majawa helped Township Rollers beat BDF XI 2-1 to secure their place in the Mascom Top 8 final.

Media reports indicate that captain Chikondi Likwemba netted a consolation for Letlapeng Sporting Club who lost to leaders Mochudi Centre Chiefs on Saturday.
