He said Chafera was arrested while trying to disembark from a bus with a passenger’s laptop bag.

“We caught him red handed getting away with a passenger’s bag in a bus and after interrogation, and searching at his house we found seven laptops which he confessed to have stolen from different buses at the depot,” said Mayawo.

He said police also recovered fifty ammunitions which Chafera stole from a bus in March 2014.

The ammunitions belonged to Speedys Food Industries and were stolen while on transit to Lilongwe with the Company’s Security Officer.

Mayawo said police also arrested four men in connection to the case.

“The four, Eric Namanja, Frank Sinoya, Stain Dodoma and Henry Kanyongolo are suspected to have been Chafera’s customers for the stolen properties” he explained, adding they will answer charges of buying stolen property.

Chafera is expected to answer charges of theft. He comes from Chadera village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalumo in Ntchisi.
