There was drama at Adventist Development Relief Agency (Adra) headquarters on Thursday when a girl under age 10 wreaked havoc at the front desk in a desperate attempt to shake hands and perform with Michael Usi of Manganya comics.

According to Adra receptionist Christina Makawa, the girl, from Chilomoni Township, stormed the office premises around 8am and shoved her away to see Usi, who is the organisation’s deputy country director.

“The girl claimed she had first seen Usi on Tikuferanji TV soap could not wait to see Usi. When I told her to wait, she slapped me several times and forced her way in. She said she was going nowhere until she was filmed performing and shaking hands with Manganya,” said Makawa in an interview.

Dubbing the incident ‘unusual’, the receptionist said the girl even feigned collapsing and cried ceaselessly when she was told to take leave because the Manganya actor was scheduled for a meeting.

In a separate interview, Usi said he surrendered the girl at Blantyre Police Station around 10am.

“When I allowed her in, I thought she was just another fan of mine, but the few times I told her to try acting with me, I discovered she is a good performer with some mental challenges. I hope the police will help her trace her way back to Chilomoni while I scrutinise what the laws say on underage actors,” said Usi.

He said he has bumped into fans of all classes—from people of special needs to honourable ministers—who bay for a cameo appearance with him, but would only feature the girl in Tikuferanji if the law permits. Tikuferanji airs on MBC TV on Thursday nights and tackles issues ranging from HIV and Aids to Food Security.
