Mangochi chiefs advised to be neutral

The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has advised chiefs in Mangochi not to stop parties from conducting political campaign rallies in their areas.

CHRR district coordinator Kidwell Chipwatali gave the advice at the weekend when his organisation conducted civic and voter education at Mwanyama Village in the district.

Chipwatali said CHRR is sensitising community leaders to their roles and responsibilities during elections.

“As you are aware that we are close to the May 20 Tripartite Elections, this is crucial time and tensions are always high during this time. Every political party does what they know best at least to sell their manifestos to the electorate. This is only achieved when political parties are given the floor to articulate issues.

“CHRR wants to level the political play field for parties to campaign without excuses. We do not want some chiefs to create no-go zones for opposition political parties in their areas of jurisdiction,” he said.

Chipwatali also urged people to attend political campaigns to enable them to make informed choices during elections.
