The organising committee has since appealed for assistance from the public. With a budget pegged at K1.5 million (about $2000), the committee is yet to source over 80 percent of it as only over K250 000 (about $336) has reached their account.

Manase Chiumia, a survivor of the 1959’s massacre who is also the vice-chairperson of this year’s event organising committee, said on Monday that for years the committee has been facing hurdles to raise funds for the function.

He further blamed the tendency of some people who on several occasions have pledged support towards the event, but have not lived to their word.

This year’s event falls under the theme “Sacrifice Ourselves To Develop Malawi.”

President Peter Mutharika is expected to grace the event as guest of honour.

Meanwhile, to facilitate donations towards the event, the committee has opened a bank account (NBS 003041480901, Nkhata Bay Martyrs Memorial, Nkhata Bay Branch) where well-wishers are being requested to deposit contributions. n
