Masamba knocks out Kudakwache

Limbani ‘The Lion’ Masamba on Boxing Day knocked out Kudakwache Banda to reclaim the super welterweight national belt at a packed M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe.

Masamba, who appeared physically and mentally fit, proved too strong for Kudakwache, knocked out Banda in the seventh of their 12-round bout.

His strong and accurate punches overwhelmed Banda right from the word go and it was just pure endurance that he lasted seven rounds.

In the third and fourth rounds Banda was knocked down but managed to beat the count.

In the seventh round, prior to his corner men throwing in the towel, he twice fell after absorbing too many body and face punches.

In a post-match interview, a jubilant Masamba said: “I thank God for the win. I thank my brother John and Zimbabwean coach Clyde Msonda. We prepared well both in the gym and in the ring.”

On his part, Banda Banda accepted defeat.

“My opponent prepared well. I tried all I could but it didn’t work, it was tough,” he said.

Masamba’s promoter Craig Rousseau, who predicted victory for his boxer prior to the bout, expressed delight at the win.

“I told you he [Kudakwache] won’t last. We had a game plan and it worked. ‘The Lion’ is very fit and locally I don’t see any one matching him,” he boasted.

The title fight was organised by Ngwenyama Boxing Promotions.  n
