Wilson Masamba defeated Acras Mchombo on points in an eight-round non-title contest at Afro Motel Gardens in Blantyre on Friday to successfully avenge a defeat he suffered in Lilongwe over two months ago.

The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) pugilist, who has so far fought twice since his return from a peace-keeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), registered 79-70, 78-72 and 77-65 on the score cards of judges Desire Kambewa, Yolanda Kaitano and Daudi Chikwanje respectively, to add a 19th victory to his record of 27 bouts.

The 28-year-old challenger, who had his elder brother John as his corner man, could have earned the victory through a technical knockout had the towel thrown into the ring, after Mchombo kissed the canvas in the sixth-round, came from his opponent’s corner man and not from a boxing fan.

Mchombo, sustained a deep cut which oozed blood under his left eye-lid in the last three rounds but he kept on giving Masamba tough time in the ring with some solid punches that came with legitimate power and speed.

The fans probably enjoyed the action in the final rounds when the two boxers that aimed for a knock-out. They traded punches back and forth, each landing some effective and very hard body shots.

However, in the end, the blood flow from the eyelid took its toll on Mchombo’s performance and Masamba took advantage of that to land some telling jabs that put his opponent out of sorts, seconds before the bell rang.

“I am excited with the victory and this is my starting point of more wins to come. Nevertheless, I have to salute my opponent for being resilient.

“I knocked him down twice but he kept on coming back. That was awesome,” said Masamba.
