Masanjala calls for reinforcement

Blantyre United coach Alex Masanjala believes only reinforcement can save the team from its current TNM Super League struggles that continued with a 2-1 loss at the hands of Chikwawa United Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

“Most of our key players left. We hope to bring in some during the transfer window. It is always difficult to produce results in these circumstances. Fisi Matama [Brown Mizeye] starts training with us next week and we hope to be sharper upfront,” said the veteran mentor in a post-match interview.

At the giant arena, Dave Chadewa restored Chikwawa’s lead which United captain Greyson Phiri had wiped out in the second-half while the visitors from the Lower Shire visitors were then leading through Ian Banda’s wonder third-minute free-kick.

United, who have lost players such as Sparrow Msowoya, Victor Limbani, Tizgobere Kumwenda and coach Elia Kananji to Big Bullets, are second from the bottom on five points from nine games having only managed two wins.

Chikwawa assistant coach Richard Shawa praised his senior Thom Mkolongo for arresting the rookies’ seven-game losing streak to jump off the foot of the table to 12th with seven points from 11 games.

Down the table, Mighty Wanderers are despite Saturday’s 3-0 beating of Chikwawa United, stuck on four points from nine games, whose six points were deducted.

Up the table, Blue Eagles returned to the top on superior goal aggregate after whipping Karonga United 6-1, then drawing 2-2 with second-placed Moyale Barracks who also have 20 points just like third-placed Big Bullets who suffered their first 1-0 loss to Epac on Sunday in Lilongwe.

In week nine of the league, 183 goals have been scored in 70 games with Mafco’s Kalista Kalinda leading on seven goals from nine games while his side is placed fourth on 17 points.
