Malawi Defence Forces (MDF) Commander General Ignacious Maulana has said the image of his institution is deeply dented by Cashgate links.

Maulana said this in an interview on the sidelines of an End of the Year Ball held at the Officers’ Mess at Kamuzu Barracks on Friday night.

He said MDF as an institution has not been implicated in the looting of public resources known as Cashgate, but just individuals within MDF.

Said Maulana: “It is not the MDF which was implicated in the Cashgate, but just a few individuals. It is unfair to thousands of MDF personnel who are law abiding officers and soldiers when you associate MDF with Cashgate. You are hurting men and women of MDF who are just innocent.”

Commenting on the year just ending, Maulana said they performed well despite the bad economic situation facing the country.

Asked on the relationship between MDF and the Malawi Police Service (MPS), following the shooting of an MDF soldier in Zomba by a cop, Maulana admitted that there are some problems.

“Our relationship with the police is cordial, but there are such issues that have come up and we are discussing that. It is important that each institution knows its role and officers know how to handle arms and also when to discharge fire. It is unfortunate life was lost,” said Maulana.

Inspector General of Police Paul Kanyama was one of the VIP guests during the MDF party.
