Chiefs in Mchinji District have protested the poor relationship between members of Parliament (MPs) and ward councillors.

Sub-Traditional Authority (ST/A) Nyoka said Mchinji is one of the districts where the relationship between MPs and councillors is poor.

He said the MPs do not involve ward councillors in different development projects.

Nyoka made the remarks in Mchinji on Thursday at a meeting National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust organised to orient the MPs and councillors on their respective roles.

“The poor relationship between MPs and councillors has led to delays in development projects in the district.  Some MPs think that councillors will get their positions hence, not involving them in development activities,” he said.

Mchinji Southwest MP Deus Gumba (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) said a good relationship between the MPs and councillors was key to development of the district.

Nice regional manager for the centre, Christopher Naphiyo, said the meeting was organised to bring together the three groups so that they can interact and get to know each other by sharing views on development issues. n
