Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has intensified its efforts to gain ground in the Northern Region by engaging the youth in sporting activities.

Speaking at a rally after one of the tournaments in Rumphi on Sunday, MCP youth director (Central Region) Goodwin Mseka said the party has lined up such activities to strengthen discipline in the party.

He said discipline among the youth is important as it helps to woo more supporters to the party.

“If we are disciplined, people will join us in large numbers. But if we [continue to] quarrel, people will ignore us,” he said.

Mseka said the party also wants to reach out to the youth with trainings on how to monitor elections ahead of the 2019 polls.

He said the party faced challenges in 2014 when some of its youths could not even complete forms.

MCP youth director (North) Mathias Mgemezulu said the party is gaining ground in the region. He said this is because they have involved the youth in various activities to keep them away from immoral behaviour.

“As such, the youth are able to identify themselves with us who have a special interest in their affairs,” he said

MCP has two out of 33 MPs in the Northern Region. n
