The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has said its athletes who will stand out at national level will represent the country at the Southern Africa cross-country scheduled for Maseru in Lesotho later this year.

Deputy defence force commander responsible for operations and training Lieutenant General John Msonthi Jnr said this on Friday during prize presentation at the MDF inter-unit cross-country competition at Zomba Gymkhana Club.

Msonthi said it was pleasing to note that MDF cross-country teams in both male and female categories did well at last year’s national event.

“The event is an important activity to MDF because it requires physically fit soldiers and it has a significant impact in moulding fit soldiers. We use this event as a platform to select individuals to compete with our civilian counterparts both nationally and internationally while encouraging interaction among service members,” he said.

He said the development translates into an opportunity for the deserving athletes to travel abroad and earn extra money.

“However, for this to be a reality, there is need for individuals to be working harder and desist from behaviours that may shorten careers as we have already witnessed in some cases,” said Msonthi.

He commended HTD Limited and Malawi National Sports Council, among others, for their continued support of the event.

During the competition, Moyale Barracks retained the trophy for the fourth consecutive time whereas Nancy Matanda and Happy Nchelenje were winners in the eight-kilometre female and 12-kilometre male categories respectively.
