It was a great victory for the winners who outclassed 26 teams of four golfers each.

MDF Commander General Henry Odillo, his deputy Lt General John Msonthi Jnr and Chief of Staff Major General Clement Namangale formed the MDF team.

British High Commissioner Michael Nevin, partnered the German Ambassador and two other diplomats.

Chilima said Malawi soldiers played an important role in world wars and they need recognition.

“This is an important event and it is worthwhile for the country to recognise the role played by the war veterans. The freedom we are enjoying today, other people paid a sacrifice for it,” said Chilima.

Odillo thanked the 26 sponsors of the event, who included Nation Publications Limited, for contributing towards the welfare of the war veterans.

“Their pension is not enough to sustain their livelihoods. The pension they depend on is a contribution from the monthly salaries of officers and soldiers of the MDF. We thank you all who have contributed today to make a difference in the lives of our soldiers,” said Odillo.

He said the golf event was organised to make the most of the visiting British Army Band which is in the country for some outreach programmes.

Nevin said war veterans played an important role for the freedom we are enjoying today and we have to honour them.

“It has been a 100 years since World War I. Without our veterans, we would not be where we are today. They did a lot to stop aggression and bring about the freedom we are all enjoying today,” said Nevin.
