Mdina Business Solutions and Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) have agreed to conduct the K800 000 (about $2 424) Mdina Individual Chess Championships in Blantyre from December 22-23.

Newly elected SRCL chairperson Eric Kazembe said this during the league’s meeting at the Chichiri Shopping Mall in Blantyre on Saturday.

“Chess players should intensify preparations because the days are drawing closer for the showdown. Each player will be required to pay K1 000 (about $3) before contesting,” said Kazembe.

In an e-mail message, Mdina Business Solution’s managing director Tiwone Mdina who is based in South Africa, said he is glad that finally the date is set for the annual competition.

“It is our intention to merge the vision of Mdina Business Solutions with that of chess. We aim to promote high cognitive thinking among people. We want the two entities to be part of the solution to our economic and mental liberation,” said Mdina.

This is the third time Mdina Business Solutions is sponsoring chess tournament in the country. Kajani Kaunda won the inaugural event while Edgar Khan is the current titleholder.

The contest, whose ultimate prize is K50 000 (about $151), will take place at College of Medicine (CoM).
