The 2014 edition of K300 000 Mercury Products sponsored squash tournament got in motion at College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre yesterday.

The final is scheduled for tomorrow.

A statement from Squash Malawi indicates that the three-day tournament is the second that Mercury Products has sponsored this year.

Tournament organiser and Squash Malawi vice-president Gordon Benbow said 40 players are expected to fight for honours in A, B and C categories.

Benbow, who finished fourth in last year’s Mercury event, is also among the players to watch and is fresh from winning his first local trophy for General Alliance over a month ago at the Blantyre Sports Club.

“Following Gordon Benbow’s win in the General Alliance Tournament 5 weeks ago, all eyes will be on the two best squash players that Malawi has produced in the last 10 years, Aubrey Taulo and James Matewere,” reads a Squash Malawi statement.

Ten players bound for the Commonwealth Games this July are also expected to use the Sports Complex event to test the skills that squash national coach Donald Gondwe imparted to them in camp.
