Flames midfielder Micium Mhone will have to face the harsh reality of playing in the South African National First Division (NFD) after his club Jomo Cosmos was relegated from the top-flight league on Saturday.

Cosmos, who earned promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) at the start of the season, finished at the bottom of the 16-team league.

However, another Malawian forward Atusaye Nyondo breathed a sigh of relief as his team University of Pretoria (UP) will have to play in the play-offs after finishing second from the bottom.

Mhone, who has completed his first season with Cosmos, did not get a run as his side lost their final league game 3-1 to Maritzburg United to wind up the league with 25 points. They needed to win to escape relegation.

On the other hand, Nyondo played a full game for UP when they beat Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango’s Golden Arrows 2-1 to secure a play-off slot.

Robert Ng’ambi and Robin Ngalande’s Platinum Stars finished a respectable third, behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns and runners-up Bidvest Wits while Flames captain Limbikani Mzava’s Mpumalanga Black Aces finished fourth.

Gabadinho’s Arrows finished ninth while Esau Kanyenda’s Polokwane City finished on 13th position. n
