Migration gaps exposed

A fact-finding tour that Minister of Information, Tourism and Culture Kondwani Nankhumwa had at Mzuzu Post Office yesterday exposed gaps that the switch-over to digital migration is experiencing.

During the tour, Malawi Posts Corporation (MPC) regional manager (North) Olline Mkandawire asked government to train salespersons selling the Malawi Digital Broadcasting Limited (MDBL) set-top boxes (STBs) or decoders as they lack information.TV

She said: “It is hard for them to sell the STB with the little knowledge that they have as they have not received any training.”

Mkandawire also told the delegation that the post office has no television set to use for demonstrating how the STB works as most of their customers do not know how to use it.

She said currently they have borrowed a set from a staff to use for demonstrations.

In an interview on the sidelines, Nankhumwa said the fact that Mzuzu Post Office sold 18 STBs yesterday is an indication that Malawians are aware of the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT).

He said currently Zomba has 7 000 STBs while Mzuzu has 5 000 in stock.

However, in a snap survey The Nation conducted in the city, most people are still complaining of the STB prices which are now selling at K15 000 down from K20 000.
