This is a festival where Tumbukas from Malawi and Zambia honour Gonapamuhanya who was the first Chikulamayembe, leader of the Tumbuka tribe.

She said cultural villages would act as museums where tribes’ cultural practices, language, beliefs, customs and foodstuff will be preserved.

“We need to take a leading role in preserving the country’s culture. To that effect, we must set up cultural villages where all aspects of our cultural life will be on display. My ministry will be at your disposal for any assistance,” she explained.

The minister said the cultural centres will not only help preserve culture but also act as sources of revenue for the country through tourism.
