Ministry donates security gadgets to people with albinism

Ministry of Gender,  Children, Disability and Social Welfare has donated 83 security gadgets to people with albinism in Chitipa.

Speaking during the donation in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwaulambia on Wednesday, Chitipa Police station officer Pax Thavi said government is doing everything possible to ensure that people with albinism are safe from abductions and killings.

Enwell Silumbu, a father of two children with albinism, thanked government for the gadgets.

“At least my family will now sleep peacefully. We have always been scared, fearful of a possible attack on my children,” he said.

Group village head Ishalikila said the gadgets will alert communities of any criminal attempts on people with albinism.

“In many cases, the most vulnerable people are women and children. As such, the gadgets will help them to raise alarm to the surrounding community whenever they are in danger,” he said.

Communities in Chitipa expressed concern over the delay in completion of court cases involving attacks of people with albinism.

Currently, there are two cases where a woman’s arm was chopped in T/A Kameme’s area and a gravey of a man with albinism was exhumed in T/A Mwenewenya.

But in his response, Thavi assured the people that the cases will be completed and that government has put in place modalities to ensure that cases on attacks and abductions of people with albinism are concluded in time.

“The cases are being investigated and will soon be concluded,” he said.
