Ministry for improved education standards

Ministry of Education Principal Secretary Chikondano Mussa has called on chief education officers to take the lead in improving education standards.

Speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday when she presided over the opening of a two-week leadership and management course facilitated by the Malawi School of Government (MSG), she stressed the need for accountability, especially on donations made to schools by non-governmental organisations.

Mussa: Be on top of your game

Mussa said the education sector is accountable to several stakeholders, including learners, the government and the citizens.

She said: “For all the complaints that are reported, you need to be on top of the game and see them to their logical conclusion.

“Deal with all the wayward teachers and reward the hardworking ones so that they stay motivated. We also need to ensure that we are offering transformative education in terms of digitalisation, artificial intelligence and other reforms that make education look good.”

Blantyre Urban chief education officer Anita Kaliu said the advice is relevant to their performance.

“It is incumbent upon us as education managers to ensure that we take the lead in implementing the policies,” she said.

Malawi School of Government Mpemba Campus head of training Humphrey Mndaka said good performance rests on the ability to motivate staff to do their best.

He said: “The course has been designed while keeping in mind that at the core of optimal performance for the Ministry of Education is understanding of government policies, processes, principles, procedures and expectations.”
