Miss Blantyre Chisomo Machelo has finally received her long-awaited prize after a long battle with the sponsor and the management of the pageant.

Presenting the car, a Toyota Passo on Friday at the Polytechnic, where Machelo is studying, both Yanga.co executive director Ernest Kapeleta and Miss Blantyre chairperson Daniel Ngwira challenged the queen to pull up her socks.

They attributed the delay in handing over the vehicle to Machelo’s lack of a driver’s licence.

“We have delivered the car, but it delayed because we wanted her to complete her driving lessons. But as Miss Blantyre told us that she was still waiting for her license, she couldn’t drive even if it were here,” said Ngwira.

On his part, Kapeleta said Yanga.co honoured the pledge, but wants to see results.

“Yanga.co has also been giving her monthly allowances since January. And we hope the big offer that comes with a motor vehicle as a benefit, will help her work effectively and efficiently,” he said.

Machelo has also been challenged to run the cause, engage fellow youth to ensure Blantyre City becomes a great city of destination and residence.

“The youth are critical and energetic to make a dream of turning Blantyre city into a paradise a reality. Machelo has support from the Mayor and city council to for her to make a difference. It’s a risk working with young people, but if not empowered and challenged, how does the same expect to see growth and productive youth citizenry,” said Kapeleta.

Among other benefits, Miss Blantyre also completed an Information Technology (IT) course courtesy of our Partner TechnoBrain. Machelo believes that given the platform, she has the best opportunity and resources to vindicate the pageant theme “Beyond Beauty”.
