Mitc urges SMEs to export more

The Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (Mitc) has urged small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) to step up efforts in exporting their products.

Mitc chief executive officer Clement Kumbemba said this yesterday on the sidelines of a Malawi Nacala Corridor Project Access to Markets workshop for SMEs in Blantyre.

Kumbemba: Overcome challenges

He said through the project, SMEs ought to now manage how to overcome challenges.

“Business is all about overcoming challenges. Even in the strongest economies, they have challenges.

“For Malawi, time is ripe for us to stop complaining and spend more time addressing those challenges, finding solutions to exporting because markets are coming up,” he said.

Kumbemba said SMEs must strive to produce what the markets are looking for to keep them in line with market needs.

In a separate interview, project team leader Dick Maganga said SMEs should be empowered as they form the backbone of any economy.

“It is important because our country needs to export for us to get foreign exchange and these are the ones to get into these markets. They are many so it is important for the country, but also for themselves to expand their markets,” he said.  n
