Twelve community-based child care centres (CBCCs) in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mlonyeni in Mchinji have received weighing scales to effectively monitor child growth in the centres.

The scales were donated by the area’s member of Parliament (MP), Deus Gumba Banda (Malawi Congress Party).

Speaking during the handover ceremony at Mlonyeni CBCC on Wednesday, Gumba Banda said he wants to ensure the CBCCs are positively impacting the areas they serve.

He said: “I am happy that through these scales, the centres will be able to monitor children’s weight and take action where necessary.”

The district’s social welfare officer Bridget Mwale said the donation answers one of government’s concern that there was lack of growth monitoring in the CBCCs.

She then advised the centres to ensure they collect enough food from their communities while people have their harvest to avoid food shortages in future.
