Reigning champions African Bible College (ABC) ladies’ side emerged as the biggest casualty in the elite eight of the Mo626Ice Basketball tournament at Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must)in Thyolo  on Saturday.

The sky fell on the champions after losing two of their three matches to Bunda 44-38 and Zomba Institute of Management and Accountancy (Zima) 51-33. They only registered a single victory against Catholic University (CU) 44-19 to miss the train for the semi-finals and finals to be played this weekend at Chancellor College in Zomba.

ABC and Bunda captured in a previous Mo626 match

The four teams that winged to the semis in ladies’ category were surprise package Zima, Bunda, Malawi Assemblies of God University (Magu) and The Polytechnic.

Zima captain Angie Mwalija said being their first appearance, they did not expect to sail through.

“But the effort and hardwork that we have so far put in, made it possible for us not only to beat the champions, but also to qualify for semis.

“I can relate our victory over ABC to the biblical story of little David defying the odds to defeat the giant that was Golliath,” she said.

Zima also beat Bunda 52-35 in their other match.

In men’s category, defending champions Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA)-Lilongwe Campus won both their games against Chanco Hawks 83-73 and Bunda 49-38 to keep their title defence campaign on the boil.

MCA captain Hydin Mafuta said: “It is an elite 8 for a reason. All the teams were competitive, but through hard work, came out unscathed.”

The other teams which qualified in men’s category were Magu, Poly Wildcats and Chanco.
