Umodzi Party (UP) president John Chisi has asked Malawians to be wooed by politicians’manifestoes other than handouts.

Chisi said this on Friday at Masubi Primary School ground in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chikumbu in Mulanje during the party’s whistle-stop tour.

He told the gathering that most politicians are only active during election campaigns where they give handouts to voters as one way of buying their support.

“It is a concern that Malawians think of money when they see a politician and for many years, we have sold our votes to those who have not helped the country to develop. This should not happen during this time around,” he said.

Chisi said his party is founded on empowering every citizen to have food, clothes, better shelter and enough money.

He said no one should be cheated that government can give people everything they want, saying some promised the same, but failed.

“It is time we engaged the chiefs to manage development at community level. We want each community to have all the basic needs and to achieve this, the chiefs should be key players,” said Chisi.
