President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his administration’s support to education and indicated that government plans to promote more teachers to boost morale in the sector.

He made the remarks yesterday in Mtakataka, Dedza District where he launched the construction of 10 900 classroom blocks under the Malawi Education Reform Programme (Merp).

The President assured teachers who were not part of the recent promotions that they have not been forgotten.

Said Chakwera: “Teachers should be given the right resources to deliver high-quality formal education. They should not despise working in rural areas because of poor infrastructure and limited support.”

Implemented by the Malawi Government, the World Bank and Global Partnership for Education, among other partners, Merp will include refresher courses for head teachers and deputies.

The programme will create jobs for over 4 000 primary school teachers and a fund for provision of socio-economic livelihood bailout for educators in remote rural areas.

Chakwera further encouraged mindset change towards realisation of Malawi 2063. He also condemned acts of corruption, brutality towards the elderly and mob justice, saying peace and unity should reign despite people’s differences.

He also expressed concern over the prevailing hunger situation which has affected areas such as Golomoti and Mtakataka, where the developmental rally took place.

Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima said the project seeks to improve the learning environment for learners in lower primary schools. It has six components that include expanding and reforming primary school improvement grants.

It was built on the success of the successful project under the Malawi Education Sector Improvement Project.
