The Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) needs K4 million (about $10 500) for air ticket expenses for five athletes earmarked to represent the country at the International Association of Athletics Federation (Iaaf) championship in Morocco next month.

AAM president Godfrey Phiri on Thursday said the association’s technical committee would come up with names of the Morocco-bound athletes to be selected from the national track and field championship held in Lilongwe last week.

“Our budget is K4 million to send five athletes. This is our chance. I want us to try and send relay race athletes since most southern African countries have produced good teams for relay races,” explained Phiri.

After the national event in Lilongwe, AAM general secretary Frank Chitembeya cited 100 metres number one Pachichi Nyasulu and his runner-up Wakisa Kalyembe as possible candidates for the event to start on September 3.

Other outstanding performers during the annual championship were Suzen Tengatenga who won 100m and 200m gold in the women’s category with Pachichi Nyasulu emerging number one for the men’s side in 100 metres whereas Peter Kachikho was number one in the 200m run.

Stella Peter was the 400m champion with Limbikani Kamakanda as the men’s gold winner. Peter also showed her class in 800m as the number one with Mazunzo Kesiteni doing it for the men’s section.

Nalicy Chirwa excelled to first position in 1 500m for women with Abina Tchinga declared the men’s champion.

The 2 500m had Grevazio Mpani as its king and Mudana Phiri leading women.
