Malawi’s marathon king Henry Moyo has set himself lofty standards for today’s 56-kilometre Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town, South Africa.

“I am ready and everything is set. I know that the race will be very, very tough, but I will manage to make it among the top 10. I want to break my personal record of this competition, which was 3:11 hours,” Moyo said in an interview from Cape Town yesterday.

The annual marathon attracts top runners from across the world, but the Zomba police officer, who is in his late 30s, is not bothered.

“I will be expected to cross the finish line at 3:08 hours. I am determined. Let me take this opportunity to thank the Malawi Police Service Inspector General Peter Mukhito, who allowed me to come here in good time for training. I do not want to disappoint him,” he said.

Moyo is ranked as the best Malawian marathon runner having won the Mandela and Kuala Lumpur marathons since 2005 and the Zululand District Municipality 56-kilometre race on March 21 2011.

Last week, Moyo failed to defend the Zululand gold.
