MP, deputy mayor promise Zomba Community renovations
Member of Parliament (MP) for Zomba Central Patricia Kainga Nangozo and Zomba City deputy mayor Davie Maunde have assured the football fraternity in the old capital that Zomba Community Centre (Zacc) ground perimeter wall will be rehabilitated in two weeks’ time.
The two were speaking at Chinamwali ground on Sunday during the final of Davie Maunde Trophy.
The perimeter wall collapse rules out the facility from hosting TNM Super League matches this weekend.
Kainga Nangozo said as an MP for the area, she has lobbied for the renovation of the ground which provides entertainment to its residents.
“I consulted management of Zomba City Council on the rehabilitation progress of the perimeter wall and they have assured me that work will start shortly.
“This ground serves the interests of the communities and it is proper for authorities to consider this,” she said.
The legislator further added that she has forwarded a proposal to government to consider construction of a modern mini-stadium in Zomba.
In his remarks, Maunde said the rehabilitation works of the fence will be completed in two weeks’ time adding that funding for the project was already sourced and the contractor will start the work.
“A lot has been said about the renovation of the facility. Indeed the venue will not host TNM Super League matches for the first two weeks, but everything has been finalised for the project to start,” he said.
Two weeks ago, some concerned residents threatened to march in protest against the authorities’ failure to renovate the facility.
This followed an incident where the perimeter wall collapsed while people sat on it watching a friendly match between Zomba United and Be Forward Wanderers. n
