MP donates cement bags to Kasungu Market

Kasungu Central Constituency member of Parliament (MP) Amon Nkhata (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) on Tuesday donated 200 bags of cement worth K1.5 million to Kasungu Market.

Speaking during the symbolic presentation in Kasungu, the MP said he donated the bags of cement to affected vendors at Kasungu market which was gutted by a fire last Saturday. He said many vendors suffered losses and cannot afford to buy building materials for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the market.

Said Nkhata: “The symbolic presentation is to ensure transparency and accountability so that the affected people should actually see the cement which was promised. There is a committee which will monitor the use of the cement. We are very happy to have managed to source money from development funds.”

Nkhata said he also plans to provide iron sheets considering that rains are around the corner.

Kasungu Central Market vendors’ chairperson Burnet Saudi said the donation was timely as most affected vendors could not afford to buy reconstruction materials.

He said: “We are very excited about the donation of cement to the market as it will help in reconstruction and because it has come at a time when most vendors were helpless.”

He, however, asked for other well-wishers to emulate what Nkhata has done, saying this will go a long way in helping Kasungu vendors who cannot afford to buy rebuilding items. n
