MPBC, Mwamaso clash over title defence

Local national middle Weight champion, Felix Mwamaso has accused Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) of forcing him to defend the national middle weight belt against Brian Mwando despite the boxer not agreeing with the bout’s purse.

Mwamaso said promoter Alufandika Boxing Promotion has pegged the bout at K200 000 without training allowance, a development that has not gone down well with the Mzuzu-based boxer.

“The public should note that I will be quitting boxing because of the unfair treatment I am getting from our board. They are forcing me to defend my belt against Brian Mwando on February 20 in Blantyre at Robins Park on a purse that I am not happy with. I feel this is unfair and the best solution is to totally quit the sport,” he said.

Mwamaso lift the national middle belt after defeating Alick Mwenda in Lilongwe last year in a 12-round bout at Lilongwe Community Centre, is demanding K200 000 plus training allowance of K15 000 and transport fee for him, his coach and his manager.

“I got K200 000 for this belt. I expect to get more than that now in the defending bout,” he said.

But MPBCB general secretary Gibson Chisale has warned that if Mwamaso will not fight the February 20 title bout against Mwando, he will lose the belt.

“We are not forcing him to fight. We are just making sure that the rules are followed. Mwamaso is keeping belt which he is supposed to defend after every three months.

“It is the responsibility of his manager to secure him a fight within that period. We feel the amount [K2000 000] is not that small considering the economic hardship the country is going through,” he said.

Promoter, Robin Alufandika said he is still keeping the funds for the bout.

“I am ready to promote the bout and the money allocated to it intact,” he said. n
