The number of contestants for Mr. Zomba Bodybuilding Championships slated for Pajokala Lodge in Zomba tomorrow has been trimmed from 22 to 10.

Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (Wbam) Eastern Region chairperson Bright Limani said the trimming was made after assessing the athletes.

“We assessed all the 22 athletes in terms of body mass size (bulkiness of muscles) and body definition (body muscle cut) to make sure only top quality bodybuilders take part in the event. We are happy to have finally come up with a final list,” Limani said.

This means the battle will be among Moses Ngoma, Stephano Msonkho, John Nyithu, Brian Chibaya, Molton Mhango, Ophaniel Kanyenda, Moffat Matengo, Alfred Dzimbiri, Mackson Kambewa and Wyson Nkhwani.

Limani said reigning Mr. Zomba Thoko Kakhongwe, has been disqualified due to indiscipline.

However, Kakhongwe yesterday said his exclusion was not based on disciplinary grounds as he had protested against boxing bouts headlining the bodybuilding contest instead of weightlifting related activities.

The 2015 Mr. Zomba contest, which will see the champion pocketing K100 000 (about $155), runner-up and third-positioned athlete getting K75 000 (about $116) and K50 000 (about $78) respectively, is sponsored by Pajokala Lodge, DR Hardware, H Adams Hardware, Rachel Supplies, Worth Supplies, Maziko Trading, Robani Supermarket, Ndife Otsogola Jhipego Project, Dyton Screen Printers and a Mr. Mtambo of FDH Bank. n
