MRA seizes suspected drugs at Chileka Airport

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) yesterday seized two bags containing suspected prohibited drugs at Chileka Airport in Blantyre.

The drugs were seized at the airport passengers’ terminal by Customs officers during passenger clearance.

drug-smuggle“The drugs weighing 22kgs were concealed inside 11 soft wood boards which had imprint of snakes and ladder game on the top,” said Steve Kapoloma, MRA Deputy Director for Corporate Affairs.

He said the bags were imported from India into the country by a man who was using a South African passport.

The man has since been arrested.

Importation of drugs in Malawi is a serious offence and prohibited under section 21 of the Customs and Excise Act.

“The drugs and the suspect have been handed over to Chileka Police station,” Kapoloma told Nation Online.
