FAM appointed Mtawali to take charge of the team for the July 6 friendly match against Uganda Cranes which will be part of the country’s 51st Independence Anniversary Celebrations.

FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda yesterday confirmed that Mtawali had chosen Phiri who is also his deputy in the Under-20 national team.

“We did not want to impose someone on him. He has proposed Gerald and I have since forwarded it to the executive committee,” said Nyirenda.

The FAM GS said Mtawali’s backroom staff will be announced in due course after consulting him.

Mtawali confirmed having chosen Phiri, saying he has had a good working relationship with him from the Under-20 team.

“There are a lot of good coaches, but I have settled for Gerald because I know him better. He is not the yes-bwana type, he offers constructive advice and criticism,” said Mtawali.

Meanwhile, Nyirenda has said they are waiting to hear from government as to when the team can regroup in preparation for the game.

“Government is meeting all the costs of the game and they will advise us accordingly,” said Nyirenda.
