Mtawali says it’s not over for Under-20

Malawi Under-20 national soccer team coach Ernest Mtawali has said he is confident his charges can defy the odds and turn the tables against Zambia when they meet in the return leg of the 2015 Africa Youth Championship final qualification round.

The Junior Flames lost 1-2 to Zambia last weekend, but Mtawali believes qualification to the continental youth showpiece is not beyond the realms of possibility.

“We have come a long way and the boys are determined to fight until the last gasp.

“Of course, we have a tall order, but I can see it in the body language of my players that they are not prepared to see their dream die at the last hurdle,” said Mtawali.

He said Zambia’s advantage is that they have seasoned players who have an edge in terms of experience.

“But that does not worry us and coming from a background where we have been able to do well gives me a lot of confidence. These boys are ready to sweat blood in the return leg and they need to be given the benefit of the doubt,” said Mtawali.

The Junior Flames regrouped last Tuesday and Mtawali said the emphasis is working on their physical condition, attacking as well as preparing them psychologically.

After drawing with Botswana and DR Congo at home, the Junior Flames were able to win away matches to progress in this competition. They also beat Cosafa Youth champions South Africa’s Amajita away.
