Mtimaukanena is world’s 22nd

It is official. Malawi’s first professional female boxer Agnes Mtimaukanena is ranked 22nd in her category in the world.

Meanwhile, the World Boxing Forum (WBF) has faulted the Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) for failing to recognise Mtimaukanena’s achievement on the world boxing arena.

WBF coordinator in Africa Emmanuel Mlundwa said this in reaction to Maba vice-president Henry Sakala’s recent statement that they doubted the credibility of the WBF Africa title which Mtimaukanena won after beating Kenyan Susan Adezo in the light middleweight bout at Nankhaka ground in Lilongwe.

Sakala said the local boxing governing body does not recognise the title because its constitution does not recognise WBF.

But while insisting that WBF is globally recognised as stated on http://andworldboxing.com/div.htm, where it is among the 56 world boxing sanctioning bodies, Mlundwa described Maba’s statement as shameful.

“As an organisation for amateur boxing that deals with Aiba, Maba has a right to recognise or not to recognise any professional boxing body, but such a thing has no importance to professional boxing.

“Nevertheless, Maba should be ashamed for failing to recognise the achievements of Mtimaukanena who has helped to put Malawi on the world boxing map. Maba’s duty is to make sure that Malawi amateur boxers attain standards for Olympic Games and not discrediting achievers such as Mtimaukanena.”

Sakala and his president Ladder Chimbalanga could not be reached for comments while Maba general secretary Arthur Nanthuru refused to comment on the matter. He said Sakala was better placed to do so since he was the one quoted in the media for doubting the WBF title’s credibility.

Meanwhile, Mtimaukanena’s promoter Steve Msiska of Ngumi Boxing Promotions has asked Sports Council to intervene on the matter.
